Intel® Open Network Platform Switch Reference Design

The Intel® Open Network Platform Switch Reference Design (Intel® ONP Switch Reference Design) is designed to accelerate the development of software-defined, networking-capable, top-of-rack Switches. Intel ONP Switch Reference Design provides network equipment vendors with a cost-effective, high-performance design, to base their own products on.

The Intel ONP Switch Reference Design provides 48 SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) and four QSFP 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40 GbE) ports, in a 1U top-of-rack (ToR) switch form factor.

The Intel ONP Switch Reference Design includes the Intel® Ethernet Switch FM6764 silicon, which supports enhanced features critical for SDN-enabled data center switching environments. Features include: low latency, scalability, L3 routing, data center bridging, support for load balancing, NAT (network address translation), NVGRE (network virtualization using generic routing encapsulation), VXLAN (virtual extensible LAN), TRILL (transparent interconnection of lots of links), 802.1Qbg, 802.1Qbh, FCoE (fibre channel over Ethernet), and DCBx (data center bridging capabilities exchange protocol). The Intel Ethernet Switch FM6764 delivers tremendous flexibility using the advanced Intel® FlexPipe™ technology, while maintaining best-in-class latency and throughput.

The reference platform also includes the Intel® Control Plane Processor codenamed Crystal Forest with the Cave Creek chipset on a pluggable AMC (advanced mezzanine card) module.
